[jdbb] studio makes books from Word files. Its book factory turns a manuscript into a print-ready interior and an EPUB from one source, with no hand-composed pages, and makes the audiobook from a recorded narration or a generated voice.
About
[jdbb] studio is a one-person book production studio run by Jenna Dixon. It typesets trade paperbacks, runs a client portal for the presses it works with, and has built a book factory: a small machine that takes an author's Word file and sets the print interior and the EPUB from that single source, and the audiobook, from the author's recorded narration or a generated voice.
The factory works by contract rather than by software. The author fills in a one-page transmittal — trim size, front matter, the decisions a typesetter would otherwise ask about — and the factory generates a Word template with thirteen named paragraph styles and nothing else. The author writes in that template, in Word. When a draft is ready the factory inspects the file and reports what it found; then it builds, producing the PDF and the EPUB in the same pass, in the studio's house typography and licensed print fonts. Corrections are made in Word and rebuilt in seconds, so every copy of an edition is set from the same file.
The studio's position is that most of book production is protocol — decisions that can be written down once and applied every time — and that the craft judgment worth paying a human for is a small, nameable remainder. The factory automates the first and leaves the second alone. Jenna: a sentence of biography here if you want one — years in the trade, where, what kinds of books
Facts
- What we ship
- A print-ready interior PDF at the book's trim size and an EPUB with the author's cover embedded, from one Word file, in one build; and an audiobook with a read-along edition, from a recorded narration or a generated voice.Generated narration is always disclosed as such. Interiors only. Cover design is not part of the factory.
- How a book gets in
- A transmittal (the spec) generates a Word template of thirteen named styles. The author writes in Word. There is no software to learn and nothing to install.
- How we check it
- Inspect: a machine read of the file that reports the styles used, where the file departs from the template, images and their printed sizes, and where the chapters begin. Checking is free and unlimited.
- How it is set
- Typst, driven by the studio's house typographic system — margins in proportion to the trim, text size and leading derived from the typeface, running heads, section breaks — in fonts licensed for print. The same rules apply to every book that passes through.
- How fast
- A full build of a 250-page book takes about nine seconds.
- What it costs
- A Factory Pass covers one manuscript: one transmittal, the generated template, unlimited inspections, three builds, six months of storage. Purchasing is paused for now — write to j@djinna.com.
- Where it runs
- On the studio's own server. Manuscripts are stored for the life of the pass and are not used for anything but the book.
